Alternative hosting solutions

The solution I would recommend for those of you that want more control and less dependency on my server is as follows:

- Use https://www.transip.nl/ as your domain registrar
- Use their (free) DNS service as your DNS, and point everything at 173.0.59.44 (my server)
- Register (for free) at https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/domain/new
- Create the email-accounts you use; I suggest only using 1 per person. You can add aliases (nicknames) in Google's interface
- Setup the MX servers in transip's interface to point to Google's (as specified in Google's interface)

At this point, you'll no longer be dependent on my services for your mail to work. You'll be able to use gmail as your webmail interface, and configure your email client to access Gmail over IMAP.

If you want, I can run a script that transfers all your existing email to your new gmail-hosted email.

Depending on what you want to have for a website, you could for instance also move to Google's Blogger service (like I have), or use Google Pages. Or any other service.

I've just now figured out how to restore all email and email-accounts.

I'll be doing that for all accounts tonight, which will mean you should all have access again by the morning.

I've picked up the server, and hooked it up. All data is currently being transferred to the new environment, and one-by-one I'm reactivating and fixing every domain.

I hope to have all email accounts functional again later tonight.

One day of delay; I'm picking up the old server tonight (11th) and will start transferring all
the content tonight too. So everything should slowly return to normal over the next 24 hours.

If any of you have a gmail account, let me know and I'll already try to get all your mail
delivered there. Otherwise, some bounces may occur.

Hi!

Yes, we're down... I'm working on it. Basically I'm moving everything to a new (type of) server.
Almost nothing currently works, but no data has been lost. Possibly some email sent during the
down-time will wind up bouncing, but I'm working on getting that back up also.

Please contact me via my @shebang.nl email address (which should work) or by phone/sms if you
haven't heard from me yet. Some of the domains are harder to move then others due to their
setup. I hope to have everything back online by the end of Tuesday the 11th of October.

How did this happen? Well, I've been planning the move for a while but never got round to
taken the necessary steps. The contract ran out for the old server, so it was taken offline.
I should've put more effort into moving everything before, but as you know, the hosting-bit is
not something I earn any money with so it got prioritized accordingly.

If you need a higher service-level, I do have some tips on affordable hosting-companies that
can help you out.
